We support local trade

Sandhurst FairTrade Group was set up to give full support for Fairly Traded goods, because we do not wish to support trading that reinforces poverty and starvation. However there are many foods and products that are only produced locally or regionally and as a group we also support local trade for the following reasons:

  • Today, much of our food is travelling literally thousands of miles to reach us. Along the way, food loses its nutritional value, burns fossil fuels, and contributes to global warming.

  • Local foods provide exceptional taste and freshness, strengthen our local economy, and support family farms and companies.

  • Supporting local companies provides friendly, face-to-face trading, and gives us direct information about the goods we are buying.

  • Using local shops helps to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centres. This helps reduce urban sprawl, car use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.

  • Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and keep money in our neighbourhood.

  • Small businesses can choose products based on what their customers want, not based on a national sales plan.
